My professor said that there are materials for my course on Reserve.
What does that mean? How do I find them?

Course Reserve materials are shelved by course code behind the Library's help desk. To request an item from reserve, tell the staff member at the help desk that you need an item for your class (give the course code and/or name of the course) and provide the title of the item you need. Refer to your syllabus for title, edition, and author information so that we can make sure we are providing you with the correct item.

Not all course materials are available on Reserve; if you are interested in finding out whether an item will be on Reserve at the Library, be sure to check with your instructor first.

To search the Library's catalog for Reserve items, click Find Materials on Reserve in the left-hand column on our site or under the "Services" tab on our main page.

Please note: in most cases, Reserve items are for in-Library use only, and we will hold your academy ID card while you use the Reserve item(s). Please make sure you have your ID with you before requesting an item from Reserve.

Where are the quiet places in the Library?
Where can I find a space for my group to study?

Our upper level is designated as a quiet area. The tables on our main level and the 24-hour study room are popular places for group study.

The classroom on the Library's upper level is a great space to hold meetings or practice presentations; you can reserve the classroom by speaking to a staff member.

How do I search Library databases from off-campus?

Many of the Library's databases and other electronic resources are available for off-campus access. Your login for off-campus access to these resources is your MMA login (firstname.lastname) and password.

For more information on which databases are available off-campus, or if you have difficulty logging in, please contact Library staff at 207-326-2263 or email us.

What is a database?

We're glad you asked! Click here for more information.

How do I access journals and other periodicals?

The Library has a combination of print and online journals and periodicals. You can find the most current issues of our print periodicals on the Library's main level, and all past print issues on our lower level. Many more publications are accessible online.

You can search Nutting Library's journal holdings here. (If you need to access database and journal content from off-campus, please see the previous question.)

Please note that a select few of our online journals are available only for use in the Library; you will need to ask a staff member to log you in to use these resources.

How do I borrow books or get copies of articles from other libraries?

Use MaineCat to request books. When choosing the library, we are ME Maritime. Your library barcode is on the back of your academy ID card. You can also search WorldCat and email the bibliographic information to library@mma.edu or print a copy and leave it at the desk with your name on it. To request articles, email the bibliographic information (article and publication title, author, page numbers, date, volume and issue number) to library@mma.edu. Check here before requesting to see if the article is available through a database or a paper journal.

How do I get a Library card?

If you are a student or employee of Maine Maritime Academy, you already have one! Your library barcode number is on the back of your student/staff ID. If you are not a student or employee of Maine Maritime Academy but live in Maine, a courtesy card will be issued free of charge.

My library books are due, but I still need them. Can I renew them?
Yes, click Services and My Library Materials. Your library barcode is on the back of your student/staff ID. Academy Library books renew for four weeks or until the end of the semester, whichever comes first. MaineCat books cannot be renewed.

Can you tell me who has this book checked out so that I can borrow it from him or her?
Maine state law protects the privacy of the borrower so this is not information that can be shared. The library can email the individual and ask if s/he has finished the book.

How do I make photocopies?
Buy a photocopy card from a staff member. The cost is ten cents a copy with one dollar the minimum. You may also scan and print for free. There are two scanners on the main floor and one in the basement.

Can you give me information about copyright law?
The most comprehensive source of information about U.S. copyright is the U.S. Copyright Office. Their website will provide answers to most questions about copyright.

Can I eat and drink in the library?
Yes, but only on the main floor.

Where are the rest rooms?
Upstairs by the elevators and downstairs by the exit are where rest rooms are located.

Are there any job openings for students?
Each semester, the library employs students having work study funds. A typical schedule is four hours per week. Please contact Caroline Hudson, Library Assistant, 326-2265 very early in the semester for more information.
