Circulation - Nutting Memorial, MaineCat and ILL

The loan period for faculty borrowers usually is for the entire academic year. Renewals are allowed, as explained below. Reference books, journals (single issues or bound volumes), and materials in Special Collections do not circulate.

All loans outstanding on the last day of classes of the spring semester will be considered overdue. After that date replacement costs, with a minimum charge of $50.00, may be charged for lost, unreturned or damaged materials.

RENEWALS: All materials must be physically returned to the library at the end of the academic year in April. Once items are checked in, faculty members may then check materials out for the following academic year if they wish, assuming there are no other borrower requests for them.

As with all library borrowers, failure to return materials when required to do so will result in a bill for a minimum of $50.00 per item, or actual replacement cost if more than $50.00.

Interlibrary Loan / MaineCat

MaineCat items, per the policy of the consortium, cannot be renewed. Non-MaineCat renewals vary according to the policy of the lending library. Billing amounts for lost or unreturned items are set by the lending library; Nutting Memorial imposes a $25.00 fine for lost or unreturned items as well. All ILL patrons should use materials promptly and return them as soon as possible to avoid bills and fines.

Faculty and staff are allowed a maximum of twenty MaineCat/Interlibrary loan books at any one time.

UMO Library Cards

Any student, faculty, or staff member can obtain a University of Maine library card. Most of the circulating materials at UMO can be obtained through MaineCat, but if one wants to browse and check out materials at Fogler Library, see Rebecca Whitney or Brent Hall during normal business hours (8:00 to 4:30, Monday through Friday).

Library Reserves

Placing Items on Course Reserves
It is helpful if the list of items to be placed on reserve is given to a staff member well before the beginning of the semester. In the interest of space, materials are removed after each semester unless we hear otherwise. Please keep a list of the items you have had on reserve as our computer system does not store the information.

The library maintains a course reserve section behind the circulation desk. Books are shelved by the instructor's name, or in some cases by department. Library materials of any kind may be reserved: circulating books, reference books, videos, DVDs, etc. In general, reserve items circulate within the library only, but the instructor may specify another loan period.

Although we work to assure the security of all items in the library, faculty members placing their own materials on reserve do so at their own risk.

Since we must observe copyright restrictions, we cannot accept materials that may be in violation of fair use guidelines. The librarian has the final say in such cases.

At the end of each semester, a librarian will contact faculty members with reserve materials and ask which, if any, should remain for the next term. If there is no response, it will be assumed that all items are to be removed. We cannot keep photocopies of journal articles more than one semester due to copyright restrictions. These will be returned to the professor.

Library Reserves and Fair Use
Library reserves are considered an extension of the classroom, and the same rules of "fair use" apply. The library will accept photocopies to be placed on reserve only within the copyright guidelines.

  • If the library owns the periodical or book in which the assigned article or chapter appears, then the periodical issue or book will be put on reserve instead of a photocopy.
  • Under no circumstances will the library accept a photocopy of an entire book or periodical issue.
Copyright Information

Classroom Use
Under the "fair use" guidelines of current copyright legislation, you may photocopy and distribute to your class:

  • One article from a single issue of a periodical
  • One chapter from a book
  • One illustration from a book or a single issue of a periodical
  • Two pages from a work consisting mainly of illustrations

Provided that you:

  • Use the material only once, not each term or each year
  • Use the material in only one of your courses
  • Include the copyright notice along with the material being photocopied

You must obtain written permission to photocopy and distribute copyrighted material to your classes in situations that do not fall under these guidelines.

Materials on the Internet
Copyrighted materials available on the Internet often include restrictions or instructions regarding their use. If no such information appears, you should assume that you may print copyrighted digitized material and distribute it to your class according to the same guidelines as photocopies. You may use copyrighted digitized material on your course pages provided access is restricted to your class.
