Eastern State Normal School

The Eastern State Normal School was established in Castine in 1867 as part of a statewide system of teachers colleges.  The building now known as Dismukes Hall on the MMA campus was built in 1872 and housed classrooms and offices.  Richardson Hall (Leavitt Hall) was built in 1900 as a dormitory and dining facility, and the present Quick Hall, constructed in 1928, was the school’s gymnasium and auditorium.

Maine Maritime Academy shared classroom facilities with ESNS from its founding (as the Maine Nautical Training School) in the fall of 1941 until the Normal School closed in the spring of 1942.  At that time MMA moved into its permanent home.
